Breast Cancer Awareness Crafting Project to Donate

hey everyone welcome back to the
hedgehog hollow today I have Laura but yeah we’ve been having so much fun
crafting oh yes crafting and drinking and eating and shopping shopping yes and
today she’s going to be teaching me how to make these breast cancer heart
pillows that she’s been making for Fox News which I think it’s amazing so you
want tell us about what you’ve been doing right right so I’m actually gonna
be on wre all in Raleigh next week and then FoxNews next week as well and we’re
having a stuff athan in our community to share these pillows because when they’re
complete they’re a great resource to give to people who are in the hospital
having surgery there they rest under your arm and they provide comfort from
that area that’s really tender from surgeries whether it’s and nodes being
removed or mastectomy or making it fifty at a time 50 at a time I have been
selling like a bad person because I think it matters and it’s a great way to
bring people together so let’s let’s make one let’s show people how great
these I think that’s all you can get the pattern and the directions on on my blog
and if you want to put it on your blog as well when you print the pattern out
you’re gonna get the directions okay you’re also gonna get on the second page
this size okay of a pattern it’s not big enough it needs to be blown up 200
percent if you don’t have a printer that prints huge stuff because the most
people don’t might want to print it twice like putting it in your printer
two times okay and then cutting it apart and making which is what you made which
I need you here making you a complete pattern so that’s how you can get this
to be 200% bigger and the way that that’s the pattern and then the pattern
you’re gonna put on the fold of your fabric right here
I’ve actually folded this so you’re gonna get multiple okay cuts of the same
pattern got it on the fold and it’s gonna come out looking like this so this
one has already been done done well I think it’s fun to add a little
decoration change so I cut a heart out in the complan or doctor fabric we did
find these two pink fabrics last night at jo-ann fabrics
super cute and so if you want to do the stitching Alexander because you are
great at sewing and you’re closer to the machine if you
can just use the zig-zag stitch and put that heart on right there that would be
fantastic I’ll get this out of the way for you all
right yeah it doesn’t have to be perfect this is just a great project for a way
to make a difference this is a great thing Girl Scout project begin if you’re
like the beginnings with sewing it’s so simple and easy to do and they don’t
take very long you can cut a lot out at one time and really to make 50 of them
took me about six hours I’m totally happy to donate six hours of my time
for such a great car so I don’t know if you know this or not
about me and I’m pretty sure that you do but I lost my mom to cancer you had said
yeah and it was an unknown tissue based cancer but they think that it develops
and started in the breast so this is this is a pretty important I’d like for
nobody else to have to go through and it’s so easy that you can do and I’ll
tell you every single thing people did for me during that time mattered whether
they brought my food sent me cards came and sat with me I had friends who cane
and took my mom places because it was so hard for me to do it alone
all those things make a difference perfect that zig-zag stitch just kind of
appliques it to the heart pillow you could also use a fabric glue and glue it
down afterwards I just feel like maybe that would be a little bit I know you
saw and you could add like cement stuffing in if you want to and we are
gonna add a special touch here in just a minute but first we’re gonna turn these
inside out and do we know that you are I on the first I was doing it after they
were sewn together okay but we can do it first either way I mean let’s just go
and do the Xbox that’s gonna do it I’m ashamed so I love this Cricut new mass
with polka dot about it last night only Russians and we have already cut out
with the glitter iron-on transfer paper yes silver glitter silver glitter from
Cricut love believe in hope and I’m gonna use these adorable crooked
scissors because you have crooked everything here in your studio um the
love to believe in the hope and we could put more than one word on one or we
could just put one which word do you think lands the most for you as being
the biggest difference there really hope you want word hope I do I wonder about
we could make me cook helpful on this one because we’re doing a special one so
do hope and love maybe I hate oblivion we could do all three we want to keep
them away from the edge right here because demons really seem and there is
quite a scene when you go around this so we could do I like that too
we’re gonna put it right here on the max and the mat is special because it has
some sort of magic to it tell us about that yes so it has multiple layers
inside of the map so it reflects the heat back up again so you can use a
towel there’s a special cricket link that we can pop in our blog posts where
you can go and you can tell it what you’re ironing on to whether you’re
using material in th TV or regular polyester button run all those d tenant
tells you like how long to use an easy press or with using these press why
needs to press tuna you tell it everything and it tells you what you
need to do we’re using a pink easy press yes yeah because cricket are actually
doing for the whole month of October they’re doing a give back program so if
you buy a cricket cancer bundle like a lot the pink things
if you do a project and share it yeah projects and share it if you use
some of the breast cancer artwork that they’ve got and all of these different
loads are in their designs base design space then they will give I think it’s
up to sixty thousand dollars back back to breast cancer awareness charities
which is amazing so you can go check it out will link all of that in the blog
post which will be in the video description it’s gonna be on our
Instagram on our stories it’ll be everywhere so you can go check all of
those details out so the settings for this one because we checked it
beforehand is 330 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 seconds so all of this underneath in
one pass do you think our sweet American will do two loves and then believe it
okay probably one but I’m gonna go ahead and try that in 30 seconds it’s done
it’ll be ready Randy’s mine for a Keurig and there’s so
many words you could put on the pillows you could personalize them if you’re
making them for somebody that you know you can these are actually letters that
I drew but there are lots of designs if you don’t have those coupons you could
do ones that they found there in donations there’s all sorts of different
things you can do okay that goes for anyway so yeah there’s
tons of different options you could do like the ribbon you could cut it in bulk
to like on a 24 inch mat you could get tons to fit on the pillows you could
probably do all 50 pillows in one pass on a 24 inch mat and I was saying to
Laura she hadn’t seen you can actually get the HTV in bulk I can get black the
glitter H TVs and stuff you can just roll down yeah on cricut.com so that’s
how I do mine it’s not all the colors but you can get lots of the glitters and
the kind of basic colors the enemies to let you know which I love because you
don’t actually I don’t burn it decides to be ready if you want to peel those
off and is a warm peel glitter HTV as well
so you don’t want to let it get cold because it will seal and here we go
those right off and now we’re gonna put these see that the fabric is baby facing
the fabric the color the pattern is facing the pattern and I think you have
some special pins we can use today don’t you do you have some breast cancer I do
so I like to pin these just because you’re not working with a lot of extra
space here so just a couple pins in the top parts of the heart and if you’re not
the sized which I’m not in general I also really
like these clips or if you’re doing like kids or maybe you’re doing this because
Laura does these at local bars and things you can get these clips which I
think are really easy to work with and then you don’t have to worry about
hurting yourself or those kinds of things and also then you don’t break
needles off and you just on your floor yes there is so so when you sew this if
you can just leave an opening about three to four inches right here you want
to definitely sew around the points and the curves because those are going to be
hard to man stitch close after we stop the pillow okay I’ll give you that one so can I tell you
that when you’re used to doing this yourself it’s super hard to be the
assistant because I can see you there like during this is really hard to heart
be the assistant it’s good first though it’s good for us
to practice being oh it definitely helped her you’re doing a great job
Alexandra oh thanks miss Lora so now that we have
its so we’re gonna flip it around and we’re gonna do like the reveal so where
is that opening right here and it’s amazing those iron-on words are pretty
soft yeah which is nice and of course today can be laundered and all those
kinds of things too so they’re really nice and durable yeah so I’m just gonna
run my fingernail along this seam to get it completely flipped and then down here
in the corner poke all the way till I get that that that very corner so it’s
kind of like a heart I mean it’s not even exact Harper we’re gonna stuff it
with polyfill so polyfill is from Fairfield world and they were generous
enough to donate enough polyfill like big boxes pounds and pounds of it to
fill all these pillows at my stuff with on so I’m pretty excited about that it’s
really great of them and you’re just going to open and get it stuffed in and
you want these to be pretty firm the whole idea is that they’re firm to keep
that arm from rubbing against the breast after a surgery so they’re they’re not
supposed to be saw full stuffed animals they’re supposed to be firm tight we’re
gonna use quite a bit of the polyfill to and it’s great that you’re just getting
a little peace little little little dollops or little bunches at a time
because that gives you a more even something when you try to set up a bunch
at one time it’s hard to get it even inside your pillow when did you make
your first pillow I was pervy I was in elementary school
and we made pin cushions that we did three on the front of and I still wasn’t
it like a gift for your parents gift my mom at with sweet and I still have mine
it’s upstairs somewhere I found it when we moved to the States
I did like these are square tapestries that went across there
I made my first pillow and Commack in middle school
well I think technically Posie I would have been like 10 11 so we different
there but yeah twice it was elementary good yep and then I’m just gonna use
these clips so you’re talking about here to pick this close with our fabric nice
thing in like this so that we and then we’re gonna hand stitch this Christ all right so it’s there we have it our
little cushion is all stitched up on the side there
and it comes out so a nice I love how these contours so nicely tied you they
look amazing and so much hope so much love so much reason to believe in one
little project one little pillow so next week if you are in the raleigh-durham
area and you want to come stuff along I’m gonna be at the rusty bucket on
Tuesday night from 5:00 to 7:00 and we’re gonna have pink lemonade popcorn I
think she ordered pink M&Ms and candy and stuff and we’re just gonna turn it
into a community event and you can do this event in your hometown too the
pattern is on Hedgehog holo it’s also on me and my Inklings calm my blog and do
it be a difference maker definitely go to cricut check out their design space
for breast cancer designs if you want to use other words or other designs and
purchase Cricut during this month the pink bundle give back through crickets
great program yeah there’s all sorts of ways to get involved will link all of
those up for you or add it to Instagram Facebook all of those ways as well and
we’ll add this pillow into your collection as well and we’ll make a few
more while you’re here as well so there’ll be lots of them to add in go
and participate in Laura’s event you can create your own events as well of course
don’t forget to hit subscribe go check out Laura Kelly designs share this
pattern with everybody here Oh lots of these events and it’ll be on WRAL I
think you’re going to also do it in Denver it’s Fox News in Denver next
